Leadership Chemung is designed to develop individuals for future leadership roles in Chemung County and the Southern Tier. For more than three decades, this program has been providing the opportunity for business community members to broaden their knowledge and awareness of Chemung County and hone their leadership skills.
During this extensive educational experience, which runs from September through April each year, participants attend class sessions covering a variety of topics. Upon completion of the program, the Chamber holds a graduation ceremony for participants at the Elmira Country Club in May, sponsored by Chemung Canal Trust Company.
Classes, taught by local business leaders, cover the following topics:
- County History
- Listening Skills & Communication
- Community Revitalization
- Multi generational Interaction
- The Business of Education
- Workplace Safety
- Team Building
- Conflict Management
- Leadership Intelligence
- Visionary Leadership
- Making Your Case
- Technology and its Effects on Leadership
Additionally, participants are asked to complete an interview of someone they view to be a local leader, a review of a leadership book, and a group volunteer project for a local nonprofit organization. The volunteer projects are always a highlight of the program for their positive impact on the Chemung County community.
In the Chamber’s Lower Level Board Room, the history of Leadership Chemung is on display to celebrate those who have answered the call to lead, with photos of class members dating back to 1988.
Leadership Chemung is overseen by a committee of business community members, many of whom are graduates of the program, dedicated to continuously developing helpful and dynamic curriculum. For a roster of committee members, please CLICK HERE.
